Why Gen Z is Spending $2k on Camping Music Festivals (2026)

Music Festivals: Gen Z's Expensive Escape from Reality

In a surprising trend, Gen Z is willing to splurge a staggering $2,000 or more on music festivals, even during a cost-of-living crisis. This phenomenon has been observed at Australian music festivals, where thousands of young people flock to the countryside to camp and celebrate the new year. But why are they willing to fork out such hefty sums?

The allure lies in the promise of a unique experience. Victoria's renowned Beyond the Valley (BTV) festival, for instance, attracts 35,000-40,000 attendees to Barunah Plains, offering a mix of local and international artists, podcasts, pools, yoga, and secret stages. Tickets range from $250 to $500, with camping passes adding an extra $150-$350. And that's just the beginning of the expenses.

Festival-goers are happy to spend on tickets, clothes, camping gear, food, and alcohol, all in the name of creating unforgettable memories. Liam Thornton, a Melbourne local, spent $1500 on his last camping festival, excluding the ticket price, which he earned through volunteering. He believes it's an experience you can't replicate elsewhere, a chance to escape reality with friends, away from phone service.

But here's where it gets controversial: while Gen Z is willing to spend big on these experiences, the music festival industry is struggling. Research by Creative Australia reveals that over one-third of music festivals lost money in 2022-23. The average cost to run a festival is $3.9 million, with one-third reporting a median deficit of $470,000. Rising operational costs, lack of government funding, insurance expenses, and unpredictable weather events are major challenges.

So, while Gen Z is eager to invest in these experiences, the industry faces an uphill battle. Is this a sustainable trend, or will the music festival bubble burst? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
