Travel Back in Time: Flying Korean Air's Retro 737-900 from Busan to Tokyo (2026)

Step aboard a time machine and experience Korean Air's 737-900, a blast from the past! In an era where airlines are investing billions to enhance the passenger experience, it's easy to overlook the evolution of air travel. But here's where it gets intriguing...

After a series of flights, I found myself on one of Korean Air's last remaining Boeing 737-900s, a non-ER variant. This aircraft, once a part of Korean's fleet in the early 2000s, is now being phased out, with only a handful still in service.

The journey began with a seamless check-in process using Korean Air's impressive iOS app, which provided a wealth of information, from practical details like coat check availability to quirky facts about cosmic radiation exposure. A minor ticketing issue was swiftly resolved, and I was soon navigating Busan's bustling international terminal.

Lounge access proved challenging due to overcrowding, leading me to Korean's own lounge, which resembled a doctor's waiting room more than a luxurious airport haven.

Boarding was a surprise, requiring a bus ride to a remote stand. I expected Korean's mainline flights to have priority, but the close encounter with the aircraft offered a unique perspective.

Stepping onto the 737-900 was like traveling back in time, pre-#PaxEx and #AvGeek hashtags. This aircraft lacked modern amenities like the Boeing Sky Interior, seatback screens, and Wi-Fi. Instead, it boasted a retro charm with its chunky seats, recently reupholstered in Korean's new brand colors.

The flight offered a full beverage service and a complimentary meal, a rare treat for a 90-minute journey. I savored the stir-fried seafood, a unique dining experience at 10 am, made more enjoyable by the knowledge of the meal beforehand, thanks to the app.

Without the distractions of modern inflight entertainment, I was able to appreciate the simple pleasures of flight, gazing out at Mount Fuji through slightly scratched windows. It was a refreshing change from the usual inflight distractions.

And this is the part most people miss... While I'm grateful for the advancements in long-haul flying, this short-haul experience offered a unique, nostalgic charm. It's a reminder of how far we've come and the importance of continuous innovation.

So, what do you think? Are you a fan of the old-school flying experience, or do you prefer the modern amenities? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
