Training for the Long Trail: Twinway & AT Section Hike in New Hampshire (2026)

The Long Trail Continues: A Hiker's Tale of Adventure and Reflection

I've been meaning to update my followers on my training journey, and what better way to do so than by sharing my recent adventure on the Appalachian Trail (AT)? This time, I ventured into the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains, a region that holds a special place in the hearts of many AT hikers.

The AT is a legendary trail, and the section known as 'Twinway' has long been feared by many. However, I approached it with a sense of excitement, eager to explore the rugged terrain and breathtaking views it promised. My plan was to connect with a friend and embark on a multi-day hike, starting from Crawford Notch and heading north.

On the first day, we set out early, driving to the trailhead and staging our vehicles. The route took us through Crawford Notch, a picturesque area that served as a fitting introduction to our journey. We chose to follow the Gale River Trail, a blue-blazed path that led us to Galehead, a small but significant peak. From there, we seamlessly linked up with the AT, marking the beginning of the Twinway section.

The Twinway section, as I later learned, lives up to its reputation for being challenging. The trail was demanding, with long climbs and wet, muddy sections. Just as we were settling into a rhythm, the rain started pouring, adding an extra layer of difficulty. We huddled under trees, pulling on rain jackets and pack covers, determined to keep moving forward.

The rain continued until we reached Galehead Hut, a seasonal shelter that was closed and boarded up. We took a much-needed break, drying out our gear and refueling. As we continued on the AT, the weather improved, and the sun emerged, offering a welcome change from the rain.

The trail between South Twin and Guyot Shelter was a highlight, with jaw-dropping views at every turn. We were rewarded for our efforts with a stunning display of nature's beauty. After a challenging but rewarding hike, we decided to set up camp before summiting Mount Bond, a side quest that promised breathtaking vistas.

Mount Bond did not disappoint. The view from the summit was truly special, a testament to the beauty of New Hampshire's mountains. I felt a sense of accomplishment as we made our way back to camp, hungry and ready for a well-deserved meal.

The night at Guyot Shelter/Tent Site was a memorable one. Our tent pad offered an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape, and the temperature dropped to a comfortable 50 degrees. Despite the forecasted strong winds, they remained at higher elevations, allowing us to enjoy a gentle breeze throughout the night.

As I reflected on my birthday adventure, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore such a remarkable trail. The AT is a challenging yet rewarding experience, and I was grateful to have shared it with a friend. The journey taught me that the true essence of hiking lies not only in the destination but also in the journey itself.

In my opinion, the Appalachian Trail is a treasure trove of natural wonders, and the Twinway section is a testament to its rugged beauty. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most challenging paths lead to the most rewarding experiences. So, to all the hikers out there, embrace the unknown, and let the trail guide you to unforgettable moments.

Until next time, keep exploring and pushing your boundaries.
