Why Were the Demogorgons Missing from the Stranger Things Finale? The Creators Spill the Beans—and It’s Not What You Think!
The dust has settled on the Stranger Things series finale, but fans are still buzzing with questions. One of the biggest head-scratchers? Why didn’t Vecna and the Mind Flayer unleash their terrifying minions—the demogorgons, demodogs, and demobats—during the climactic battle at The Abyss? These creatures have been central to the show’s five-season arc, yet they were conspicuously absent in the final showdown. But here’s where it gets controversial: Was this a creative choice or a missed opportunity? Let’s dive in.
In a candid interview with TheWrap, creators Matt and Ross Duffer shed light on this puzzling decision. Turns out, Vecna was completely caught off guard by Eleven and her friends’ daring infiltration of The Abyss. And this is the part most people miss: The villain never anticipated such a bold move on his home turf. As Matt Duffer explained, ‘Vecna was not expecting this sneak attack. Never in a million years could he even imagine that.’
The Duffers considered including a demogorgon battle atop the Mind Flayer fight but ultimately decided against it. Why? They felt the Mind Flayer’s sheer size and power rendered the minions unnecessary. ‘Why does he need the demos when the Mind Flayer is this giant thing and can attack them?’ Matt Duffer questioned. ‘He doesn’t need his little ant army; he’s going to take care of this himself.’
Here’s the kicker: The Duffers also admitted to experiencing ‘demo fatigue.’ After exploring these creatures extensively in earlier seasons, particularly in Sorcerer, they wanted to keep the focus on Vecna and the Mind Flayer, who had been largely absent in Season 5. ‘We felt like we did everything we wanted to do with them,’ Matt Duffer said.
Interestingly, the original three-hour version of the finale (which was never written) did include a demogorgon battle scene. There was even a planned Aliens-inspired moment where the gang would stumble upon a field of demo eggs. But, as Ross Duffer quipped, ‘You can’t get all your ideas in there.’
Now, let’s spark some debate: Was omitting the demogorgons a stroke of genius, keeping the finale focused and intense, or did it rob fans of a satisfying payoff after five seasons of buildup? What do you think? Let us know in the comments—we’re eager to hear your take!
Stranger Things Season 5 boasts a star-studded cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder, and David Harbour, alongside returning favorites like Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna and Amybeth McNulty as Vickie. New additions like Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay added fresh dynamics to the final chapter. All episodes are now streaming on Netflix, so if you haven’t already, go binge and join the conversation!
