Phoenix Spicer: Remembering the AFL Star & Raising Awareness of Brain Aneurysms (2026)

A life cut tragically short: The football world mourns the loss of Phoenix Spicer, a young athlete whose sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the community. This story contains an image of a deceased person, so please be advised, especially if you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Ky-ya Nicholson Ward, the partner of the late Phoenix Spicer, has bravely shared the heartbreaking details surrounding his death, urging everyone to prioritize their health. Spicer, who played for North Melbourne for three seasons earlier this decade, died in early January at the young age of 23.

In a raw and emotional Facebook post, Nicholson Ward revealed that Spicer's death was caused by a "sudden brain aneurysm." She shared her profound grief, stating, "My heart is broken." She explained her decision to share this information: "I’ve decided to share what happened to my darling Phoenix, not because I have to, but because I want to raise awareness."

She continued, recounting the devastating moment: "I found him… we tried with everything we could to save him but we didn’t know he was already gone. It was the most traumatic experience of my life." She emphasized that Spicer did not take his own life. The post further explained, "Days later we found out that Phoenix passed into the Dreaming from a sudden brain aneurysm. He never complained of headaches or showed any signs that something was wrong."

But here's where it gets controversial... This raises a crucial point: How often do we truly listen to our bodies? Nicholson Ward's message is a powerful call to action: "Please, if you can, get checked and listen to your body. This can happen to anyone, at any time."

Spicer's football career included 12 games for the Kangaroos after being drafted with Pick 42 in the 2020 national draft. He was delisted at the end of 2023 and subsequently played 18 games over two seasons for the Footscray Bulldogs in the VFL. He had recently signed with Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League for the 2026 season.

Two private memorials will be held this week in Melbourne and Adelaide to honor Spicer's life.

And this is the part most people miss... The importance of regular health check-ups and paying attention to subtle body signals.
