In a surprising turn of events, the NCAA has officially denied Trinidad Chambliss a waiver that would have granted him a sixth year of eligibility, as announced on Friday. This ruling likely marks the conclusion of Chambliss' collegiate career, although Ole Miss plans to challenge this decision through an appeal, as stated by his attorney, Tom Mars.
Previously, Ole Miss had submitted a waiver request for Chambliss on November 16, and the outcome isn't entirely unexpected. The NCAA had given a verbal denial to the institution back in December, indicating that there were concerns regarding the documentation provided.
Chambliss was on track to become one of the standout figures in college football next season, with plans to return to Ole Miss. However, without the waiver, he may now transition to the NFL, where analysts project him as a potential Day 3 draft pick in April's upcoming draft. His impressive performance during the College Football Playoff has certainly elevated his profile amidst these developments.
The crux of Chambliss' waiver appeal centered on ongoing respiratory complications he faced during his sophomore year at Division II Ferris State. The NCAA required specific medical documentation that would validate his condition during that time, which they claimed was not adequately provided by Ole Miss.
In their statement, the NCAA explained, "Approval necessitates that schools submit medical documents from a treating physician at the time of the student-athlete's injury or illness. Unfortunately, those documents were not submitted in this case."
This situation potentially concludes the collegiate chapter of what has been a remarkable journey for Chambliss. After transferring from Ferris State, he rose from relative obscurity to being one of the sport’s recognized names. He achieved notable success during the season, finishing eighth in the Heisman voting, throwing 22 touchdowns, and delivering a striking performance against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
The NCAA clarified its reasoning further: "The records furnished by Ole Miss and Chambliss’ prior school included a physician's note from a December 2022 visit, which indicated that he was 'doing very well' since the previous August. Additionally, the prior institution noted that it lacked any documentation concerning medical treatment or conditions affecting him during the relevant period and cited 'developmental needs and our team's competitive circumstances' as reasons for his absence in the 2022-23 season. Consequently, the waiver request was denied."
Despite not participating in the entire previous season, Mars emphasized that the NCAA had received a substantial amount of medical documentation—91 pages in total. Expressing his disappointment but not surprise at the ruling, Mars remarked, "The only score that truly matters is the final one at the end of the fourth quarter."
He also mentioned that while Ole Miss intends to appeal the NCAA's decision, there exists the possibility of escalating this case to the Mississippi judiciary, where Chambliss' rights could be evaluated more equitably, rather than by officials in Indianapolis who may not fully appreciate the nuances of the situation. Ultimately, the choice of whether to pursue that path rests solely with Chambliss and his family.
This announcement from the NCAA came just a day after Ole Miss experienced a narrow defeat against Miami in the College Football Playoff semi-finals, losing 31-27 due to a touchdown scored with only 18 seconds remaining in the game.
