Lando Norris's Key Trait That Secured His 2025 Formula 1 World Championship (2026)

Imagine the roar of the crowd, the spray of champagne, and Lando Norris, against all odds, clinching the 2025 World Championship! Many doubted him, labeling him too emotional, too prone to mistakes. But he proved them spectacularly wrong.

In a nail-biting season finale, Norris not only overtook his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, but also held off the relentless Max Verstappen, securing the title by a mere two points. It was a triumph built on a phenomenal second half of the season, showcasing a new level of maturity and consistency.

Following his victory, Norris, ever the humble competitor, shied away from declaring himself the absolute best in Formula 1. "I hate ever having to try and compare myself to other people," he stated. "All I try and do every weekend is the best of what I can... write what you like, decide what you like."

While Norris undoubtedly benefited from driving the formidable McLaren MCL39, its advantage wasn't constant. From the Azerbaijan Grand Prix onwards, Verstappen and Red Bull emerged as serious contenders, and for a significant portion of the season, Piastri led the championship charge within the McLaren camp. But here's where it gets controversial... McLaren's decision NOT to favor one driver over the other, allowing internal competition, could have cost them dearly. Some argue that prioritizing Norris earlier would have secured a more comfortable victory. What do you think? Was McLaren's even-handed approach a strength or a weakness?

The turning point, and arguably the key to Norris's success, was his ability to consistently extract the maximum performance from his car in the latter races. This allowed him to both close the gap on Piastri and minimize the damage inflicted by a resurgent Verstappen.

"I certainly feel like at moments I’ve driven better than I feel like other people can," Norris admitted, revealing a newfound confidence. "I feel like I drove at a level I don’t think other people can match... But have I also made my mistakes? Yes. Is there stuff Max could do better at times than me? Yes. Do I believe he’s unbeatable? No. But you also don’t know, do you? It’s hard to know."

McLaren initially seemed poised to secure both the Constructors' and Drivers' championships after the mid-season break. However, at the Italian Grand Prix, Red Bull unlocked a significant performance upgrade for their RB21, transforming them into a constant threat. This breakthrough, some say, was due to a subtle aerodynamic tweak that significantly improved downforce in high-speed corners. And this is the part most people miss... Red Bull's resurgence wasn't just about raw power; it was about clever engineering and relentless development.

McLaren ultimately clinched the Constructors' Championship in Singapore, but Norris had to wait until the Abu Dhabi finale to secure his individual crown. It was a tense affair, made even more challenging by McLaren's refusal to prioritize one driver over the other, allowing Piastri and Norris to inadvertently take points away from each other.

The fact that Red Bull struggled with consistency in the first half of the season proved to be a crucial factor. "They also struggled with the car in the mid part of the season," Norris acknowledged. "They’ve had an incredible second half of the season. They took advantage of the fact we had two of us fighting for a world championship... He really made the most of that and Max drove like he is a four-time world champion."

Norris continued, expressing his satisfaction at competing against Verstappen: "I’m very happy that I got to race against him and try to prove myself against him... My motivation is not here to prove I’m better than someone else, that’s not what makes me happy... Deep down, I don’t care about that. I don’t care if every article is, 'Do you think he’s better than me?' or 'Oscar’s better,' or whatever it is. Doesn’t matter. I have no interest in that."

He concluded, "I’ve just done what I’ve needed to do to win the world championship. That’s it. And I made my people happy... That’s all I really care about at the end of the day."

This approach signifies a notable transformation in Norris. He was once perceived as overly sensitive and easily discouraged, characteristics that were thought to hinder his chances of becoming a world champion. Instead, he emerged as the standout performer, irrespective of how others rated him.

"That’s one of the things that makes me most proud," Norris stated. "I feel like I have just managed to win it the way I wanted to win it, which was not by being someone I’m not... Not trying to be as aggressive as Max or as forceful as other champions might have been in the past – whatever it may be. I’m happy. I just won it my way."

He added, "I’m happy I could go out and be myself and win it Lando’s way, as Andrea [Stella] would tell me. That certainly makes me happy."

The confidence and self-assurance that were previously lacking were now evident. The Norris who finished the 2025 season and was crowned world champion in Abu Dhabi was a different driver from the one who started the year with a win in Australia. He was more thoughtful, more confident, and more at ease with himself. He had become the best version of Lando Norris he could be, making comparisons to Piastri or Verstappen irrelevant. Ultimately, his journey demonstrates that self-belief and unwavering commitment to one's own style can triumph over external expectations and perceived limitations.
