Actress Juliana Olayode has bravely shared her experience of grappling with depression and suicidal thoughts for a harrowing three-year period, emphasizing how she concealed her internal struggles from the outside world.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Olayode reflected on the profound insights gained during her battle with depression, particularly the critical role that joy plays in healing. She recounted how her mental health challenges manifested physically, leading to weight gain as her body seemed to shut down under the strain.
She expressed, "For nearly three years, I faced deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Each day, I put on a brave face, pretending that I wasn’t suffering or feeling like I was dying inside.
"It was through this dark experience that I truly understood the healing power of joy; my entire being felt like it was giving way. I received a diagnosis related to my condition, which resulted in significant weight gain, yet it was still nothing compared to the emotional burden I was carrying within.
"If you have never experienced depression, it can be easy to underestimate what those affected endure. Similarly, if you have not faced suicidal thoughts, you might misinterpret the actions of those who take their own lives as selfishness. However, for many, it feels like the only escape from unbearable pain.
Olayode also acknowledged the value of therapy, stating, "Therapy can be incredibly beneficial. I sought therapy myself, but ultimately, sometimes the best solution is to turn back to your Creator for a true and perfect remedy—one that comes at no cost. All it requires is for you to open up and say, 'Fix me, Lord.'
"I am profoundly grateful for my complete healing and restoration. I share my story in response to numerous messages from individuals struggling with depression and suicidal ideation. Remember, this is not the end! Do not heed that dark voice whispering in your mind. The sun will shine again. Pour out your burdens and harmful thoughts to God; confide in Him fully, and He will guide you through. I assure you of His support.
"This is a vulnerable post, and I genuinely empathize with what you are experiencing. Please don’t act on those impulses. What you are facing is a shared human experience, a part of life itself.
"If you find yourself in this situation, it's because you have the strength to overcome it; you possess the inner resilience needed to emerge triumphant and whole.
"God loves you deeply and desires for you to heal and thrive. You must reach out to Him. Trust me on this. I am sending you prayers, warm embraces, and love. Remember the words from 1 Corinthians 10:13 and Daniel 3:27, which remind us that we are not alone in our struggles."
