A surprising new rule has left drivers in Eagle, Idaho, feeling caught off guard and confused. The familiar intersection of State Street and Eagle Road, a well-known spot for locals, has undergone a significant change, and it's causing quite a stir.
For decades, a simple left turn at this intersection was the norm for those heading westbound. However, this familiar maneuver is now illegal, and it's sparking controversy and confusion among drivers.
The change is part of the Ada County Highway District's ambitious Downtown Mobility Project, a two-year initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing highway safety. But here's where it gets controversial: the new rule restricts southbound turns for westbound drivers on State Street.
Eagle Chief of Police, Travis Ruby, explains, "The ACHD's research and engineers determined that limiting these turns was one of the best ways to improve traffic flow. So, if you're heading west through downtown Eagle and reach the intersection of Eagle Road, you're no longer allowed to turn left or go southbound."
And this is the part most people miss: even though the change has been in effect for some time, GPS systems still direct drivers to make that illegal left turn. It's a recipe for confusion and potential citations.
Initially, police focused on education rather than enforcement, understanding that this intersection has been a fixture for decades and people are accustomed to their old patterns. However, now that the education period has ended, officers have the discretion to issue warnings or citations.
Chief Ruby emphasizes, "Our deputies have a lot of discretion when they make stops. There are many factors to consider, but if enforcement is necessary, we'll take action."
To comply with the new rule, drivers need to use an alternate route. Chief Ruby suggests, "To connect to Eagle Road, you can go west through Eagle Road to the next intersection, Old Park Place, which loops around behind a local business and brings you back up to Eagle Road."
