A Startling Crash: When a Drunk Driver's Actions Turn a Quiet Night into Chaos
A Dunedin resident was jolted awake by a loud crash at 2.05 am. Stepping outside, he discovered a car had crashed into his front yard, with the driver calmly strolling away. The incident unfolded as follows:
The homeowner, startled by a loud 'bang', ventured outside to investigate. There, he found a car had crashed into the front of his house. The driver, a 30-year-old man, emerged from the vehicle and walked off, seemingly unbothered. The residents followed him while contacting the police.
Police located the man on Andersons Bay Rd. It was revealed that the man, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was driving his friend's car when he lost control, crashing into a parked car. This collision caused the parked car to shunt into another parked vehicle. The man's car then careened through the resident's fence, crashing into the front of the property.
Breath testing revealed a breath alcohol level of 1006mcg, surpassing the legal limit of 250mcg. Police also discovered that the man had a bail condition prohibiting him from operating any vehicle with an alcohol level over 0mcg. Despite this, he opted for a blood sample to be taken.
The man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop to ascertain injury. He is set to appear in the Dunedin District Court today. This incident underscores the dangers of driving under the influence and the potential consequences for both the driver and others.
