Zuffa Boxing: Callum Walsh's Dominance on the Opening Night
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Ireland's Callum Walsh emerged victorious over Carlos Ocampo, marking the inaugural event of Dana White's Zuffa Boxing in Las Vegas. The opening night, though low-key, hints at a potential revolution in the US boxing scene.
Walsh, previously featured on UFC Fight Pass, showcased a steady performance, landing his signature left hook repeatedly. Despite a controversial knockdown in the sixth round, which some deemed a result of balance loss rather than a genuine knockdown, Walsh's record remained unblemished at 16-0. The judges unanimously awarded him a wide decision, with scores of 98-90, 98-90, and 97-91.
However, at just 24 years old, Walsh is still a work in progress. The event, hosted by the newly renamed Meta Apex, was an intimate affair, attended by VIPs, media, and a few notable figures from TKO, the parent company of the UFC and WWE. Among the guests were UFC legend Nate Diaz, American comic Theo Von, and UFC stars Alex Pereira and Jai Opetaia, a cruiserweight world champion signed to Zuffa Boxing.
The fight card was fast-paced, with most bouts being competitive. The ringwalks were swift, taking less than a minute, and fight bonuses of £37,000 were awarded to the winners. Three of the eight fights featured undefeated fighters, a strategy that Zuffa Boxing plans to emphasize.
Tom Loeffler, the vice president of boxing operations for Zuffa Boxing, highlighted the promotion's unique approach: "The great thing about Zuffa Boxing is that even if you have a loss on your record, as long as you're an exciting fighter who captivates the audience, you'll be back in the ring within two to three months, just like in the UFC structure."
The Meta Apex, the current home of the UFC and its performance institute, serves as an ideal starting point for Zuffa Boxing. However, Loeffler revealed that the promotion will eventually move to a more mobile setup, "The first few shows will be here, but then we'll hit the road."
Zuffa Boxing's potential impact has sparked debate, with some, like Eddie Hearn, expressing skepticism. Meanwhile, others, including the WBC, have labeled White and Zuffa Boxing as "bullies" and "aggressive" due to their aggressive expansion plans. Despite the controversy, Loeffler remains optimistic about the promotion's ability to transform boxing, "What sets Zuffa Boxing apart is the energy and expertise of Dana White, combined with Nick Khan's success in WWE. Together, they will breathe new life into the sport."
