The situation surrounding Atlanta Falcons linebacker James Pearce Jr. has taken a serious turn, as he currently remains behind bars facing five felony charges linked to an alleged domestic dispute involving WNBA player Rickea Jackson.
Pearce, who recently gained recognition by finishing third in the Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting during the NFL Honors ceremony, was taken into custody on Saturday in Miami-Dade County. His charges include two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated stalking, both felonies. Additionally, he faces severe accusations for fleeing from police and eluding capture, which are also felonies, along with a misdemeanor charge for resisting arrest without violence.
He is presently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond has been set at $20,500. The case has been assigned to the specialized unit handling felony domestic crimes, and Pearce has been issued a pre-trial order requiring him to stay away from Jackson, who plays forward for the Los Angeles Sparks.
In a statement to WPLG-TV, Doral's police chief Edwin Lopez shared that Pearce was apprehended after allegedly fleeing the scene of the dispute and subsequently crashing his vehicle during a police pursuit.
The Falcons organization has acknowledged the challenging circumstances they now face, having released a statement indicating they are "gathering more information" regarding the incident.
